In 2010, â€Å"over 20 billion hours of volunteer service were reported† in the United States (Hoffman 418). For such an outstanding amount of time, only 26.7% of the population reported volunteer hours (Hoffman 418-9). Philanthropy, a desire to improve the material, social, and spiritual welfare of humanity, especially through charitable activities, is dependent on the altruistic values of the American society. Philanthropy is a general love for all of humanity that manifests itself in the form of community service. Altruism is the foundation of volunteering; volunteering is the foundation of community service, and community service is the foundation of charity. Altruism is the belief that acting for the benefit of others is right and good.†¦show more content†¦Commencing a community project is not free; it can sometimes be extremely expensive. It is possible to seek government funding but many regulations must be followed. Service organizations can be a great way to get involved, but for some, membership is not free. It costs $85 a year to be a member of the Assistance League of Orange, a local branch of the Assistance League, a philanthropic organization dedicated to serving the cities of Orange and Villa Park, California. The only way to volunteer for the services the Assistance League offers is to become a member, and that means making the commitment of both time and money. Community service can be a redeeming feature for people in need. It helps families be able to support themselv es and provide and not worry about things like dental care. The Assistance League of Orange provides free dental care for children in the Orange Unified School District. As wonderful as it is for the families, the dentists cannot work free and the Assistance League spends enormous amounts of money, but the dentists work for a small fraction of their normal wages, to keep the service going (Martin). Nevertheless, as long as the money helps those in need, it should be worth it.
